The Step-By-Step Guide To A Successful And Productive Yard Sale
Summertime is usually time to head to the beach or take a vacation, but for us old-timers who’d rather stay home, it’s usually yard sale time again. It’s time again to grab your better half (or maybe your kids, if they’re home) and start clearing out the clutter and detritus that resulted from your most recent spring cleaning.
Boy, that’s a lot of stuff, isn’t it, but what’s in it for you and how do you get rid of it all?
Step Number One. Get it organized. You do not want mixing living room bric-a-brac with books. Sounds easy, right? Everything alike in one area.
Second Step. Create your ad for the yard sale and once done, let the local publications know about it. The best approach is often the old-fashioned route, where tried and tested lines like “Collectibles” or “Everything Must Go!” have been working with ads and signs for decades. So many people overlook color schemes when creating their yard sale signs, but we believe the best would be bold black marker ink on a striking yellow card background. These colors make a formidable combination with their ability to captivate while still being readable. Don’t make the mistake of writing too small. Your lettering must be large enough for passing motorists to see it easily. Top it all off with a large arrow pointing to your house, and of course your home address.
Step Number Three. Price your items. There are certain items, pocketbooks or clothing such as sweaters, that would have a better chance of selling in two-for-one or three-for-one deals. Create small cards to place on your set of books say, “3 for $5.00.” As we said – make like Noah and group those like items together and you will be flooded, no, deluged with interested buyers!
Fourth Step. Use special setup techniques for tables. Your smaller items, such as jewelry, can benefit from a special table set up just for them. Do it like the antique dealers do – they accentuate smaller items by using a dark tablecloth. As opposed to bare, blase tables, this sure makes your small items stand out! Also, sorting jewelry into individual baggies gives the idea that each item is special – even if it’s not!
Step Five. Let’s Get It On! The table has been set, runners are on base, so probably you’re thinking you can just sit back as your yard sale hits a flurry of home runs in cash form. Well, not really. Really, the best thing you can do to ensure a lucrative sale is to mingle with people – don’t pull a Howard Hughes on your potential customers! Being reclusive isn’t conducive – to good sales, that is. Kiss babies and make goofy faces to the kids if that’s what it takes. Tergiversate and negotiate, all with a smile on your face. Throw something in for free and tell them, “The more you buy, the cheaper you can get it.” Your goal here (besides making money) is to get rid of your clutter!
Step Number Six. When the yard sale is over, don’t put everything that’s left back into your house. It’s tempting to save it for the next yard sale but you’ll usually just end up selling the same items over and over again. Take everything to a charity such as Good Will or the Salvation Army. That will make your yard sale a true success – cleaning out all of your unwanted stuff!
